Taking a leap into the unknown and moving is one of life’s biggest challenges and adventures. I believe so many people feel stuck and think they can never change their surroundings. There’s this relentless feeling that we are bound to a certain job or home-base forever, but imagine if you could book a one-way ticket to wherever you decided and just…stay awhile?
I have always traveled, but I always came back to the familiarity and comfort of my childhood hometown. The thing about travel, though, is that it changes you, if you do it right, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to come back to that familiarity as a different person.
Being stagnant is one of my biggest fears, so in 2019, I broke up with my comfort zone.
My husband and I moved out of state and left everything we had known for almost 30 years to set up shop in a brand new location.
Moving is making advances or movements toward something. It means you’re not going back, and you must change to adapt to your new surroundings. But how is moving different from travel? Well, ultimately, travel comes to an end. You have a great time, check off your itinerary, and return home. And then what? You continue your usual routine until the next exciting moment comes along? But what if the adventure doesn’t have to end? You could have an endless amount of time to explore local spots, cool restaurants, and beautiful outdoor locations. You’d never have a time limit to exploring a new place!
Moving is definitely a bigger commitment than a vacation. And it ain’t easy! We had to find new jobs, buy and sell homes, and move within a short amount of time, which also included relocating our 4 dogs with us!
Sometimes, all it takes is a little change to shake things up, and your life can be drastically different in a great way. Sure, I miss the familiarity occasionally, but I also no longer feel defined by where I grew up. A new location does not guarantee instant personal happiness, but it is damn cool to live in a place that fits your personality and energizes you.
